Lord Of The Flies Symbolism Essay - 814 Words
The Dangers Within Masks are oftentimes used as a technique to hide oneââ¬â¢s identity. In the novel, Lord of the Flies, the author William Golding, explains an the journey of a group of boys and the discoveries of their inner savages. These boys are isolated from the adult world after their plane crashes onto an island, presumably caused by the world war that was occurring. The children have to manage themselves and form their own rules and civilization. Eventually, not having any older authority, the boysââ¬â¢ true characters are revealed. Various masks are presented throughout the story to represent this idea, such as, wounds, face paint, and long hair. In the novel, Lord of the Flies, William Goldingâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The use of face paint is a way to disguise themselves. An example of this, is when Jack explains how they ââ¬Å"paint [their] faces so [the prey cant] seeâ⬠(p.55). This shows how they are blending in with the dangers of their environment. The paint permits the boys to set their inner savage free. This behaviour was not previously acceptable in their previous civilized British homes. Their violence facilitated a sense of fear within the boys` relationships. An example of this fear being expressed is when Eric says, ââ¬Å"theyââ¬â¢ll be painted! You know how it isâ⬠. This shows how the dangerous thoughts, that flow through the minds of the boys, are expressed through the use of their face paint. The rapid growth of each individualââ¬â¢s hairs, demonstrates how the violent civilization of this island is formed. An example of this is when Ralphââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"hair [begins to creep] into his eyesâ⬠(p.88). This compares the ideas of violence and hair. It shows this by acknowledging the fact that the hair cannot be cut, because they do not have the proper tools. This idea is similar to the violence that cannot be stopped, due to their lack of maturity and extreme savageness, proving they are lacking in certain areas to prevent their violence. The boysââ¬â¢ hairs are constantly growing, as is their violence. Another example is when Ralph ââ¬Å"[stands] one hand holding back his hair, the other clenchedâ⬠(p.69). This demonstrates how hisShow MoreRelatedLord Of The Flies Symbolism Essay726 Words à |à 3 Pagesalways refer to their morals to make decisions. Sanity is lost without referring to your morals. Richard Nixon An Effective Autocratic Leader - 2244 Words
Richard Nixon was an effective Autocratic leader because of the way he handled the Vietnam War crisis, the SALT 1 talks with the Soviets, and off course the Watergate scandal. The events that made Richard Nixon the man as well as the politician are from an early age he and his family suffered many life hardening events from an early age he lost two of his brothers to Tuberculosis, as well as this strong desire to be the best at everything he did whether it was in normal life and his school life as well as his adult life in the military and in politics. In his Political life there are more prime examples of Richard Nixonââ¬â¢s more autocratic side he showed this side more on the international scene then he did on the domestic scene with his manipulation as well as his circumnavigation of Congress with his increased involvement in Vietnam and his major deal making with the SALT treaty with the Soviets where he Manipulated the Soviet hand to get a more favorable deal for the United S tates. The Purpose of this paper is two fold is to explore autocratic leadership style and traits as well as show his strengths and weaknesses and explore the ethical dilemmas that plagued him. Trial of Socrates free essay sample
In my opinion I think Socratesââ¬â¢ teachings have been beneficial for Athenian democracy and he should not be on trial let alone convicted of anything. Socrates only taught things that only helped further democracy and pointing out the falls of democracy can help Athens. Socrates helped the youth learn about their specific roles in society and how it makes society function properly and is something that democracy does not have. The falls should not be something to hate him for, but something to learn from. Socrates describes in The Republic that in a perfect society people perform their roles in the community for the benefit of society. It does not matter what you do for the community whether you are a farmer or soldier or shoemaker you do that skill your good at. If a farmer was trying to do the work of a soldier and the solider the work of the farmer neither will be able to benefit the community very well because the farmer and the soldier are not equipped with the right skills to perform one anotherââ¬â¢s job. We will write a custom essay sample on Trial of Socrates or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The farmer is best at farming and the solider is best at fighting and being a protector of the community. Socrates talks about this in this quote ââ¬Å"no two of us are born exactly alike. We have different natural aptitudes, which fit us for different jobs. â⬠1 In that quote Socrates is talking about how people are born with different skills and abilities. He also mentions that because everyone has different skills and that means we will have different jobs. We will have different jobs because are skills determine what were good at whether that is making shoes or farming everyone has a different job they are skilled at. Socrates teaching about how people have their own place in society helps Athenian democracy not hurt. When people do what they are skilled at it increases production. Socrates explains this well in this quote ââ¬Å"Quantity and quality are therefore more easily produced when a man specializes appropriately on a single job for which he is naturally fitted, and neglects all others. â⬠2 In that quote Socrates is explaining that when someone focuses on the job they are naturally skilled at they produce more product and have better quality than someone who is not naturally skilled in that job. Also when the person is doing the job that they are naturally skilled and does not worry about or do any other jobs they produce more with quality. When a democracy has a people working the jobs they a naturally skilled at the people produce more. Also the people will be happier doing what they are good. If you are bad at math it is not going to be fun to do and wonââ¬â¢t make you happy. On the other hand if you are good at math you will enjoy it because it comes to you naturally and is easier for you than it would be for someone who is not good at math. When you are good at math you can finish problems faster than someone who is not good at math. That example applies to the any professions someone who is skilled at making shoes can make them better faster and better than someone who is not skilled at. With people doing what they are good at and being happy I cannot see how it would hurt democracy. Another way that Socrates is beneficial to Athenian democracy is that he is educating our youth. It is good that our democracy is full of highly educated youth and young adults because they will be our next leaders and you do not want uneducated people running Athens. Education is key in having a flourishing democracy we need to educate the youth that are naturally skilled at being diplomats understand the laws and understand how our government functions. With the understanding of the government and its functions they can make good decisions about the future of Athens. Also having only educated people on assembly prevents decisions being made by people who do not specialize in government. We do not want a fishmonger making decisions like if Athens should go to war when he has no education in what would be the right thing to do in that situation. That could hurt Athens and our democracy if we let whoever have a say in government. Socrates even says ââ¬Å"A democratic society in its thirst for liberty may fall under the influence of bad leaders. â⬠3 In that quote Socrates explains that when we have uneducated people in government we are susceptible to electing bad leaders. Having bad leaders in a government will destroy our democracy. That is why we need to educate our youth and have an educated assembly, so we can avoid having bad leaders. Socrates also says in this quote ââ¬Å"an excessive desire for liberty at the expense of everything else is what undermines democracy and leads to demand for tyranny. â⬠4 In this quote Socrates is explaining how democracy can lead to a tyranny. A tyranny is not something we want for Athens because it did not work out for us before and we voted to not allow the people of Athens to talk about them. If we educate our youth and have an educated assembly we can avoid having bad leaders and we can also avoid having Athens turn back into a tyranny. Socrates is also beneficial to Athenian democracy because he find the flaws in democracy. I have described some of the ways Socrates points out the flaws in democracy. He points out how if you have a democracy people will do whatever job they want to do even if they are not skilled at and it will hurt production and could cause shortages of products. Socrates also shows us how a democracy can lead us to a tyranny. People might hate Socrates for down talking democracy and saying it is the second worst government next to a tyranny. That should not be something we should hold against him. The people of Athens should use his teachings as something to improve our democracy. We should not look at his teachings as how bad our society is, but as a way to make it better. Socrates talks about how a democracy will let everyone do whatever job they want even if they are not skilled at it. He also talks about how that could lead to shortages like food, clothes, etc. To avoid this down fall of democracy the educated assembly should make a law that allows a certain amount of jobs. For example since we do not want a bunch of people being fishmongers the assembly could make a law that makes it so that there are a limited amount of fish mongering licenses. With only a limited amount of fish mongering licenses it will increase the competition for those licenses and will cause people who wanted to be fish mongers and were not good at to find a job they are more naturally skilled at. Socrates also mentioned that a democracy is the second worst government to tyranny and also that a democracy leads to tyranny. To avoid this downfall of democracy the educated assembly could add make law requiring that members elected into the assembly meet certain education and experience requirements. A law like that can eliminate bad leaders from ever entering any powerful government positions. Democracy may have some falls according to Socrates, but learning about the potential downfalls and addressing them will be what is beneficial for our Athenian democracy. Socratesââ¬â¢ teachings will help our government avoid downfall. Socratesââ¬â¢ teachings will also help Athens flourish. Athenian democracy can flourish when everyone does the job they are skilled at and we have the educated people in government making decisions that are best for Athens. Socratesââ¬â¢ teachings are the reason why Athenian democracy has even a chance at flourishing and bringing Athens back to what it was.

JetBlue Case Study
Introduction JetBlue was founded as a small entrepreneurial company. Authority was centralized with the CEO having making almost all decisions. Delegation of power was almost non-existent.Advertising We will write a custom case study sample on JetBlue specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The CEO basically controlled all operations at the firm. Since its inception, the CEO cultivated the entrepreneurial spirit which saw the company grow tremendously but at the same time reflecting the original image of a small low-cost airline. At JetBlue, the CEO has cultivated a culture of being unique; standing out from the competitors. Being a low-cost airline, it itself does not offer the uniqueness since there are others in the category. What made it unique was the high quality of passenger services and comfort. The company CEO always insisted on three things: low-cost, great product and capitalization. With this experience, talent and expertise, Neeleman saw the companyââ¬â¢s profit grow tremendously and this success may have contributed to the growth of the uniqueness culture. It is not easy to operate in the low-cost range and yet offer high quality services. This made the companyââ¬â¢s strategy difficult to imitate and hence it stood out. Strategic Change Goals of the new Project There are two major goals in this project: first is Enacting growth in a cost effective manner while, at the same time, maintaining the entrepreneurial culture. Second is to maintain the image of a low-cost airline that is Jet Blue. Ethical issues and Social responsibility Jet Blueââ¬â¢s business is in an industry where ethicality is a key issue to be considered direct interaction with the customers, calls for good moral values and integrity. The airline is an entity in itself and should be given a personality. The personality of the airline is reflected in its employees. In the case study, when the CEO apologized to the passengers who suffered the impact of flight delays, he did so on behalf of the company. This shows that the company values its customers and will not wish to inconvenience them. The move to compensate customers and give them a free full round trip in addition to the profuse apologies was another way to bring out the ethical nature of JetBlue. It is in best Interest to accept oneââ¬â¢s mistake and rectify than to point a blaming finger on someone else. JetBlue knew this too well and hence had the courtesy to agree that the flight ought to have been cancelled like in the other airlines; and instead of blaming it on the bad weather, JetBlue apologized and made it up for the stranded customers. This goes along way in building customer trust and in return earns their loyalty.Advertising Looking for case study on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More As a social being, JetBlue faces the responsibility of ensuring the wellbeing of those that it interacts with. The first thing that is notable at JetBlue is the low cost of their flights. It has ventured into the unexploited routes and offered fairly affordable flights that encourage even non-flyers to enjoy the luxury of flying. Secondly, the services offered are reasonably prestigious considering the cost. Classy refreshments, comfortable seats and individual seatback TVs is far too much for a low-cost flight. Again by letting the passengers communicate their feelings concerning the 2/14 flight delay publicly shows that the customersââ¬â¢ feelings are catered for. Another responsibility facing JetBlue is being profitable. The owners should boast of a return on their investments. Strategic Approach The project at hand is aimed to substantially cut down cost while increasing profitability and enacting growth. A strategic approach that aims at minimizing production cost yet offer appealing services to the customers will best suit JetBlue. Looking at Porters generic strategies, the low cost leadership Strategy offers the best strategic measures that can help JetBlue achieve its goals. For instance, the decision by the New CEO to drop the idea of adding more jets to their fleet is a way of avoiding additional cost and this is suggested by Porter, 1985 in this generic strategy. He further argues that access to a large capital investment at entry creates a barrier that may not be crossed by any other company. Initially, JetBlue started off with huge investment capital but now that it is recovering from a blow, it is like a fresh entry altogether and the new COO is strategizing and implementing ways in which to accumulate capital for an effective comeback. The strategic plan to cut down the number of current flights and introduce a new route is an assured way reduces cost incurrence. By reducing the number of flights, we introduce some free hours of labor and idle jetliners. These can be transferred to the new route meaning that there will be a new route at no extra cost. Decentralization With the founder CEO out of the scene, and having been faced with great challenges and losses, it is time JetBlue modified its operational strategy. The company needs to break up from the old culture of centralization, and diversify the decision making process. Lewinââ¬â¢s Model of change management, unfreezing, changing and then refreezing can be used to implement the required changes.Advertising We will write a custom case study sample on JetBlue specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The starting point is to break up the system that has been since inception; that is the lines of authority and power. Construct them once again but this time in a different form. The conventional hierarchical model of organization can be used in this case. The company is small and this works in favor of the model since even the topmost managers will have an idea of what is happening in the lower leve ls. This hierarchy provides a means of power delegation from the topmost position to the lowest in the ranking. The CEO who is ranked highest in this case will have the overall decision making authority but there are other levels of decision making that can be made in the lower level authority. In this organizational structure, every leadership position is assigned specific roles. This is a particularly important as it enhances accountability and stimulates the urge to work harder to achieve the goals that are expected of the leadership position held. During this change-over, there may be a lot of confusion as employees learn to work in the new system and it may cause a drop I productivity. The new organizational form may be implemented in the current design. This may make things easier for the employees when it comes to adapting to the change. Now that change is underway, it is hard to determine how the new system will be welcome but one thing is for sure, there has to be some amou nt of resistance to this change. This resistance is manageable with a little effort. This is where leadership qualities are evidently required. Communicating effectively the underlying change; its benefits and challenges and the reason why it needs to be implemented prior to implementation is particularly important (McShane Glinow 2009). This may not be a means of avoiding resistance but a way of managing the inevitable resistance. Making every member of the organization a part of the change process by holding healthy discussions, listening to their views and sharing in their fears makes each individual support the change positively with the feeling that he is making it happen and it is in his favor. Such communication issues require a strong leader. Delegation of power and Duties Now that there are different levels of authority and power, delegation of duties comes into play. The question of grouping these duties appropriately and assigning them to the relevant department is quite challenging in many cases. However, the implementation of the organizational form should put into consideration the professional background of each person before assigning them to the different department. The most effective way is to create departments based on expertise and professional or educational foundations. Advertising, for example, should be allocated to the marketing department together with issues such as when to offer discounts on trips and the like. In other words related tasks should be grouped together. When it comes to authority, orders should flow from above, however, every level of authority has its decision making capabilities. Each person should be answerable to the one directly above him.Advertising Looking for case study on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More The organizational goals can only be met if the parties involved work collaboratively towards them. However, with the delegation of authority, delegation came of duties as well. This means that every player in the process has got a role to play towards achieving the organizational goal, (Wonnacott and Wonnacott, 1986) There are needs to be a benchmark against which achievements can be measured. The benchmarks can be created by setting departmental goals. These will form a basis on which success will be measured. As an example, setting target sales may be a goal in the marketing department. The target can be based upon sale projections from previous years or the appropriate trading period. If they are not met, the person in-charge will be answerable. This accountability will translate to commitment towards realizing the set goals and objectives. Also, to determine if goals are being met, performance is measured (Sumanth, 1984). Measures of performance are based on feedback collected from customers as well as deliverables made to stake holders. Performance is measured by the following metric drivers. (House of Commons Committee of Public Accounts) Effectiveness = Actual output/ Expected output x 100% Efficiency = Resource actually used/ Resources planned to be used x 100% Productivity = Outputs/ Inputs this can also be expressed as Expected productivity = Expected output/ Resources expected to be consumed or Actual productivity = Actual output/ Resources actually consumed. Project monitoring is done by the CEO who should feed the Board of Directors with all relevant information and feed back from the employees under his command. Quality Control Quality control should be implemented in three levels; first is the incoming Quality Control, In-Process Quality Control and Outgoing quality assurance. In our case, we are dealing with a service industry and the input is mostly in terms of ideas. The ideas presented by different stake holders should be thoroughly scrutin ized to determine whether they are worthy implementing. Secondly, if an idea is to be implemented, continuous analysis should be carried out on the implementation process to find out if it is likely to yield the anticipated results. Finally, the services and other deliverables should be of the highest possible quality. In the control of quality of any business process, we need to look at all dimensions of quality. The first Dimension is experience. It has got the ability to translate a vision into a reality. Without experience, all visionary plans are bound to fail. Experience also brings about learning in an organization. An organization whose quality management process is done by a person with experience will acquire its own experience during the process and with time eliminate consultancy services. The second dimension is measurement. This is a characteristic of quality that enables the assessment of thee fact that something was done and the degree to which it was well done. The third dimension is relationship and system thinking. Relationships are seen in using such tools as graphs and charts where one variable is plotted against another to see how one affects the other. System thinking translates a two dimensional quality system to a multidimensional, integrated, dynamic and leveraged system. There are two types of thinking, dynamic and static thinking. Dynamic thinking covers the interrelationship among all the dynamically interactive parts of the system. Static thinking captures a single point in time of a process. It shows the processââ¬â¢s logical flow. Static thinking shows the relationship between one part of a system and the other parts. The point wise view of a process is more suitable in showing how the system is working at that particular point in time. The fourth dimension of quality is Interconnectivity and Paradigm logic. A system has three basic parts, inputs, processes and outputs all of which are interconnected to produce results. This fourth dimension looks at the interconnectivity in systems. That is how the parts of a system are connected and thus understand the guiding rules and principles that make the system not only work but work in a certain way. His dimension explains the logic that drives a system. The last dimension of Quality is value sharing. In relational economics theory, the value of sharing defines that if a party A gives party B something that is more valuable to party B than it is to party A then they are better off together as a result of the trade. When it comes to quality, value sharing is used to mean that you should give the customer more than what he is paying for, (Winder, 1993). Risks and Benefits This strategic change process may face opposition from the management who feel that their power positions are threatened. Also, as noted earlier, employees are most likely going to resist this change especially for fear of the unknown. Communication is the key tool that can help in management o f these crises, (Robbins, 2003). The Board of Directors and shareholders may be opposed to the change in fear of failure but if properly discussed and the benefits of the new system in comparison to the shortcomings of the old one clearly defined, they will support it. If the project is successful, the shareholderââ¬â¢s will be the first beneficiaries as the get good returns on their investments; employees may have pay rises and the security that comes with working in a successful company. Due to the diverse views in decision making process, more productive decisions are likely to be made and also with diversity in culture, come employee satisfaction as everybody fits in. Conclusion In conclusion, the project may be summarized as an organizational change induced by change in management and the need to be more profitable. Changes are inevitable, what is most important is how the change is implemented and the benefits that come with the new system in comparison to the old system do benefits out do the risk. Couples Only Essay
Couples Only Essay Couples Only? Essay Lauren Huber-Garcia Mrs. Peterson English 1301-341 February 19, 2013 Couples Only? Whatââ¬â¢s the deal? Is it the fact that there are heterosexual couples that have rights and benefits available to them unlike the homosexual couples? Or is it based on whether or not people, no matter their sexual preference, are in a marital relationship with another being. This article tries to persuade citizens, especially singles, that giving benefits and rights to married couples, gay or straight, is unreasonable. The author comes from a singles personââ¬â¢s perspective, which ââ¬Å"donââ¬â¢t share in he deal given to married couplesâ⬠and bears a different viewpoint dealing with the gay marriage issue (Harrop 675). In Froma Harropââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Gay, Straight: Whatââ¬â¢s The Dealâ⬠, she explains ââ¬Å"the dealâ⬠through his use of the appeals to Logos, Pathos, and Ethos. In this article Harrop uses facts as examples to show that itââ¬â¢s neither fair nor right that married couples are allotted privileges that single Americans do not. Take the lesbian couple for example, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦the women filed a medical-malpractice lawsuit. One of them suffered from advanced breast cancer, which the suit claimed, a doctor had failed to detect. The other wanted to collect for ââ¬Å"loss of consortium.â⬠(Harrop 675). The author belittles the couple for the ââ¬Å"collection of monetaryâ⬠which makes it seem as if she is blaming the use of the benefits that are given to married couples. The author uses this fact and compares it to those people who are close but are in a non-marital relationship. ââ¬Å"You canââ¬â¢t read this without thinking about similar hurts being felt all the time in non-marital relationshipsâ⬠¦ Why canââ¬â¢t they sue for loss of companionship, also?â⬠(Harrop 675). On the pathos she uses emotion and an angry tone that makes her irritation over gay marriage clear as well as use the word ââ¬Å"youâ⬠and ââ¬Å"usâ⬠to make the examples seem more real and personable. ââ¬Å"In doing this, the senators have earned my gratitude- though for reasons not directly related to gay rights. Rather the move will spare us all some of the repetitive back-and-forth that has characterized this debate.â⬠(Harrop 675). This technique Harrop uses allows for the author and the single American audience to meet in the middle and find some common ground on this issue. ââ¬Å"What really rankles me...â⬠and ââ¬Å"So much attention is paid to married couples that most of the public- including single people themselves- think of unmarried adults as a marginal minority.â⬠Further show her anger of the treatment towards the single Americans (Harrop 675). Another use of pathos is show in the example about the sisters. ââ¬Å"Government should have no interest in a citizenââ¬â¢s marital status. It certainly has no business sending a bigger tax bill to cohabiting sisters that to a man-and-wife team reporting the same income and deductions as the sisters.â⬠with this the author implies that the status of the relationship does not set the morality of the government and their beliefs (Harrop 676). By using the choices of words she does, its allows for the audience to see how compassionate she is about this issue and that it is r eally important to her that she portrays that to her readers. What helps make this article a persuasive article is the ethos appeal. ââ¬Å"Quickie marriages get more legal respect that friendships lasting decades.â⬠(Harrop 675). This helps her portray that society does not approve of this certain action just to receive the benefits. Harrop gains the credibility and the sense of confidence by using examples that everyday people in society can relate to. For example Britney Spears ââ¬Å"An hour after Britney Spears gets hooked to her next husband, the federal government will shower her with all sorts of rights and benefits not available to the man who has spent eight years caring for a

Pol Pot of the Khmer Rouge Regime in Cambodia- Major Influences & Essay
Pol Pot of the Khmer Rouge Regime in Cambodia- Major Influences & Motivations - Essay Example It was also in France where he became acquainted with the prospective leaders of Khmer Rouge and the masterminds of one of the most atrocious governments in human history. This essay discusses Pol Potââ¬â¢s and the Khmer Rougeââ¬â¢s regime in Cambodia, as well as Pol Potââ¬â¢s major influences and inspirations. While in France Pol Pot began to gain and nourish his leftist, revolutionary ideas. For instance, Saloth Sar took on his pseudonym, Pol Pot, while in Paris. At the same time, he became fascinated with Marxism and joined the French Communist Partyââ¬â¢s Cambodian wing.3 Pol Pot made friends with other Cambodians in France who shared his own beliefs, most of whom would be his strongest comrades for decades to come. One of his notorious friends was Ieng Sary. Sary would eventually become the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Democratic Republic of Kampuchea.4 A cohesive faction was emerging. Pol Pot socialized with numerous other Khmer scholars, such as the revolutionists Keng Vannsak and Thiounn Mumm. Numerous of these students belong to the elite families of Cambodia. For instance, Thiounn was part of the most influential clan in Phnom Penh. Studying applied science, Mumm in all probability familiarized and invited Pol Pot into the Communist Party.5 Similarly, Keng Vannsak had ro yal acquaintances. He studied Cambodian linguistics in France. Even though interested in leftist ideas, Keng Vannsak did not become a communist; but he was a passionate patriotic.6 Pol Pot and his friends started to create their radical ideologies while in France. Progressively, these radical ideologies were expressed in enormously nationalistic ways. The revolutionary ideology was to be fully independent, with the goal of building a self-governing and autonomous Cambodia. This objective would eventually put these Paris-schooled radicals against Vietnamese-inspired Khmer radicals. In the early 1950s, in

Financial Administration in the City of San Antonio TX Essay
Financial Administration in the City of San Antonio TX - Essay Example The researcher states that budgeting in the City of San Antonio TX is done by the office of Management and Budgeting. It is meant to act as a financial guide, a policy paper and a financial plan. The city of San Antonio TX budget is well formulated and executed. The budget presents an adequate overview of the entity and its financial position. This is so because it provides a summary of all the budget components, its allocation and the role of these components in enhancing the objectives of the city. The budget summary covers the element of public safety, where the police and the fire department of the city are committed to respond to the safety needs of the city residents. The budget seeks to increase the number of officers in patrol and also the fire vehicle technicians. Street maintenance is another element covered by the summary, with an additional $ 1.8 for pavement preservation and some more $6 million provided to cater for advanced transport. Animal care services will be cater ed for by a $1.7 million while education and library services will be funded to a tune of $30.6 million, which will cater for the construction of new libraries and fund the operations of the already existing ones. Employee compensation and Economic development are the other components of the budget, allocating $32 million towards civilian salary adjustments and $7 million to support the creation of new jobs, support new business development and encourage new investments. (Maria, 2011). This gives a brief overview of the budget and its components, while giving information about the city objective at a glance, to make the city government smarter and more efficient. The greatest percentage of the operating budget is accounted for by public safety, which involves fire and police department, financed to a tune of $343 million, in a total adopted budget of $948 million. The reason for such huge funding of the department is because the public safety is the priority of the city of San Anton io TX (Maria, 2011). To enhance this public safety through community policing and neighborhood teamwork, the budget seeks to increase the number of officers in patrol for narcotics by 17 more. It also seeks to add another 25 officers to the service of the people and an additional 4 fire vehicle technicians to enhance rapid response services to the public. The department is also to be awarded with two more management analyst to enhance the management of the police and the fire department, and to enhance its effectiveness and efficiency. The technology used by the department is to be advanced through new software development and installations, meant to improve the payroll division of the department. Owing to the above needs for improvements in the department of fire and police, and due to the crucial role it plays of providing public safety, the cityââ¬â¢s office of management and budget sought to allocate more fund to this department (Paul, 1998). The department alone accounts for close to 40% of all the funding done in the annual budget of 2012. This is a clear indication that the interest of the city residents takes priority in the cityââ¬â¢s management issues. Police protection is the category within that area that accounts for the greatest budget, being a key service that is very crucial for the wellbeing of the people. A total of $1.5 is to be dedicated to the improvement of neighborhood and narcotics patrol. This is meant to increase the presence of police in all the areas of the city, thus reduce the rates of crimes and drug abuse. $850,000 is meant to reassign 17 police officers to patrols, while $597,000 is meant for increasing the number of officers serving the community neighborhoods. A new helicopter mechanic, and another new helicopter mechanics supervisor are to be hired to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of services delivered to the people by the fire and the police department. This will be funded to a tune of

A History Of The British Labour Party Politics Essay
A History Of The British Labour Party Politics Essay The Labour Party is a political party in Great Britain that is just about 110 years old. The party was formed in 1900 as an outgrowth of the trade union movement and to change Parliaments interests. The reason the Labour Party wanted Parliament changed was because the people who formed the party felt that Parliament was not representing the interests of everybody in Britain. The people who felt neglected by Parliament were hard working people, socialists, and unionists. During the early stages, the Labour party struggled to make an immediate impact in Britains political system and the partys leaders had to do something about their struggle. The Labours leaders worked with Liberal Governments during 1906-1914 to help themselves gain some form of political ground. The Liberal parties eventually split in 1916 and the Labour Party saw this as a perfect opportunity to obtain power. The 1918 election proved a pivotal point for the Labour Party and even though they did not win the general e lection, they came away with one-quarter of the vote. The reason the 1918 election was so successful for the Labours was because of World War I coming to an end and the growth of womens suffrage. On December 6, 1923, the Labour Party won the general election and finally reached the major political office for the first time in its partys history. The party only held office for a few months under Ramsay MacDonald, and failed to get reelected for a second term. A main reason for the party not getting reelected was because of the Zinoviev letter. The letter was published in British press stating that there were connections between Russian Communists and the Labour Party. Due to anti-communism in Great Britain, the Labours lost the 1924 election as well as 40 seats in the House of Commons. The Zinoviev letter later turned out to be forgery, but the damage was already done to the Labour Party. The Labour Party would rebound later in 1929, but the major election they won came in 1945. The crucial election followed after the Second World War. When the war ended in May 1945, Winston Churchill called for a general election a few months later in July. The Labour Party was running under the slogan of Let Us Face the Future, and its message was that Britain cannot return to poverty and unemployment like the 1930s. The Labour Party also promised to remove disease, want, squalor, ignorance, and unemployment. The Labours ended up winning in a landslide and this presented the party with the opportunity of making significant changes for Great Britain. After the crucial election in 1945, the Labour Party once again was elected in 1950 and this marked the first time in the Partys history where they won consecutive elections. Following the 1950 election, the Labour Party would only be in office for around 14 years till 1997. The Conservative Party dominated the general elections, winning three consecutive terms in 1951-1959 and four consecutive terms in 1979-1992. This was a result of internal fighting of the Labour Party and as a consequence, people detached from the party to form the Social Democratic Party in 1981. All of these effects left the Labour Party out of dominance for nearly three decades and would not come back to power until Labour Party candidate Tony Blair was up for election. Blair had become the party leader in 1994 and won the 1997 general election in a landslide. Blairs term was also called the New Labour because it was seen as a separation from the old Labour for having different policies such as one known as the Third Way. The New Labour term was proven to be the right fit for Blair because he won the next two elections and this became the Labour Partys first time winning three cons ecutive elections. Blair did not become very popular with Great Britain and its citizens because of his stance on the Iraq War. Blair ended up resigning on June 27, 2007 and Gordon Brown was handed the Prime Minister position after Blairs resignation. Gordon Brow was the Chancellor of the Exchequer during Blairs term as Prime Minister of Great Britain. The Chancellor of the Exchequer is a Cabinet position responsible for all economic and financial matters. The economy was one of the main concerns for both Blair and Brown, but Blair had to overcome Thatcherism and implement a new strategy for fixing the economy. There were many ideological platforms that Blair ran during the 10 years of being Prime Minister, but one of the main ones was reworking the economy. The way Blair

An Article of an Earthquake in China
This article that I have chosen is a earthquake that happened in China. It was said that this earthquake had the largest measuring magnitude of 5. 7. After the earthquake, at least 80 were killed and 700 were injured. This earthquake was the heaviest in the rural area in Yiliang country. One of the elementary school collapsed in the earthquake. Authorities are not sure if the children are killed. In 2008, there was an earthquake in Yunnanââ¬â¢s neighbouring Sichuan province, which killed 80 000 people. Thousands of children were killed after shoddily built schools collapsed. In Luozehe, rescue workers strained to move rocks out of the road. They had to clear the road to avoid chaos in traffic. Civil affair departments said that the earthquakes destroyed 6650 houses and damaged 430 000. More than 100 000residents evacuated and 100 000 others are in need of relocation. Officials in Guizhou province said nearly 28,000 people were affected by the quakes, with 18 houses toppled and more than 10,000 houses damaged. The first earthquake which reached a magnitude of 5. 7 struck at 11. 19am on Friday. There were 16 aftershocks, the strongest of which reached measured a magnitude of 5. 6. Roads to the area had been damaged very badly and the police, fire fighters and volunteers were working to repair them. Landslides and rock falls had also caused significant damage and were hampering the workers effortto reach the affected villages. The Chinese government was under heightened pressure to respond quickly to potential resources like food and water. One person lamented on Sina Corp. ââ¬â¢s popular Weibo micro blogging service said that a sub-6 magnitude earthquake and again, schools collapsed. This idea presented is not relevant to what I have learnt in Geography, but I have learnt new things from this article like the effects of the earthquake in China.

What could happen to the Middle East if oil were no longer a major and primary source of energy?
What could happen to the Middle East if oil were no longer a major and primary source of energy? What might the Middle East do to adapt to such a situation? In general, what can economies based on sources of energy do to adapt to changes caused by depletion of natural resources? There is no nation that can survive economically on only one source of income. The Middle East is no exception to this. Although according to Luthans and Doh,(2012) ââ¬Å"Arab and central Asian countries rely almost exclusively on oil productionâ⬠.Exclusive dependence on any one product would definitely result in economic demise. This would result in greater poverty and economic suffering in a nation where oil is no longer a major and primary resource. The Middle East would also be faced with political, cultural and religious issues in addition to the economic conditions that would result from the loss of income from oil production and sales. This is so because; the protection and aid the Middle East cu rrently enjoys from the United States in spite of its current policies and turmoil would no longer exist. This would result in greater economic hardship to its citizens. It is imperative that Middle Eastern countries look at other industries to develop for its economic survival. In a Forbes magazine article entitled, ââ¬Å"What Happens When America No Longer Needs Middle East Oil? â⬠Loren Thompson stated that the United States will be self sufficient in energy by 2030 because of new drilling technologies, alternative fuels and the reduction in the consumption of oil reducing the need for imported oil.Sustainable development is the only way the Middle East would be able to survive economically. According to Thompson some of the things the Middle East can look at are creating alternative sustainable energy such as solar and wind power, enhancing its infrastructures such as road and bridges as proper infrastructure is a very important for commerce to be realized. The Middle East could be compared to a Jamaica for example at one point sugar and bauxite was a major industry for that country. However the government did not have a plan for the economy when the bauxite or sugar industry was depleted. You can definitely see the impact it has and continues to have on the Jamaican economy. This might be an unfair comparison; because the Middle East is more economically viable than Jamaica has ever been but the end result can be the same or worst because of the religious and cultural differences if a plan is not put in place for the inevitable. The economies should develop and implement alternative energy sources for the country, because natural resources does not last forever especially if it is not been used efficiently. If our natural resources are not been used sensibly the impact will be great. Without resources there can be no economic growth and development. The depletion of natural resources is a global problem in some instances we use these resources faster t han they can be produced.

Abusive Relationships Essay Example
Abusive Relationships Essay Example Abusive Relationships Essay Abusive Relationships Essay The scary thing about a controlling marriage is that a lot of the time, we dont even realize were in one. When youre in love with someone, its sort of Like putting on a pair of rose-colored glasses you see the happy things, the things you want to see. Its easy to Ignore the ugly things ? for example. That your spouse might be a little too controlling. You dont realize the full impact on how it degrades you and devalues your identity, until it has destroyed you enough to where you feel you cannot survive without the abuser. Research has shown that the majority of emotionally controlling individuals have also battled addictions currently or in their past. That Is consistent with the cycle of controlling nature. They cannot control their situations and be abusive so they turn to addictions to numb the need for control. The controller feels they can control their addictions too. As the relationship progresses, you find yourself altering your behavior to accommodate him, or to please him. Then, as it moves forward, more warning signs start to appear. Emotional abuse can take on many faces. It can begin with your partner becoming irritable at the smallest of action, and turning it into your fault. The key word here is fault?as In It Is always YOU that makes HIM direct the anger to you. When you try to understand this behavior and talk It out, he wants nothing to do with accepting any responsibility for the debate that ensues. The usual lines will be somewhat like this; Youre not happy with me are you, what is it I am doing to make you unhappy, why do you not like to be around me ; just to list a few. Do not answer these questions, walk away. They are usually questions asked to trigger you to respond by saying, l am happy dear That feed his controlling ego. Gradually, your communication will deteriorate because anything that you say will force an adult accusations, and blame anything but the true source, himself. Sometimes we arent able to realize the impact of this emotional abuse until we get an outside perspective, that is, when someone recognizes it, or when we leave it and look back. Dealing with a controlling spouse isnt easy and, unfortunately, it can turn into a mentally and physically abusive relationship way too easily. It may take a decade or two before physical abuse happens, but eventually if you try to stand up for yourself it will and always does lead to that. When a controlling individual feels they are about to lose what they abuse, they retaliate with anger and vengeful accusations in an attempt to make you feel that you are the problem. It is their only means of coping because they cannot truly accept responsibility for their behaviors. There are several signs listed below that indicate your husband is emotionally and mentally abusive and too controlling and if he is, get yourself out of there before its too late. If you can recognize most of them, and are experiencing at least three, you have a serious robber that requires professional help from a psychologist. However getting a controlling spouse to seek therapy and be able to accept he is the problem, then your best option is to leave the relationship, because if he cannot accept he is the problem, therapy will do no good. 1 . Are you frequently misunderstood, and your intentions looked on as if they were considered dishonorable or manipulative? Do you end up feeling perplexed and frustrated? 2. Do you feel as if there is something wrong with you, you feel bad and cant figure out why? 3. Does your husband almost always disagree with you, and the smallest of concussions evolve into a heated debate and you Just give up in frustration? 4. Do you feel obligated to give in Just to keep the peace in the relationship? Are you continually finding yourself fighting back what youd like to say, being afraid to have an opinion of your own? This will over time begin to cause you to lose your identity, your personal feeling of self-ownership. 5. Does he seem bothered when you do things without you and subtly show his discontent by repeatedly questioning what you did to try and trip you up to the point even you become confused with what you did, and get frustrated? This might be the biggest sign of a controlling husband that he doesnt want you to do anything when hes not involved. Just because youre married doesnt mean you guys cant do stuff on your own sometimes. Your husband shouldnt be getting suspicious of you for hanging with friends without him, going to party if hes not around or innocently talking to guys without him there. That is abusively controlling! If he cant let you have any time to yourself, thats a sign that he wants to be in control of what youre doing all the time. Its not fair, and is most likely because he has no true friends he an hang out with and do his own thing, because if he did, he would not be around to 6. Does he show signs of always needing to see your stuff and dig through things to get a sense of what you might be doing that he doesnt know about? Does he try to see your text messages? Does he try to look at your Faceable and see what male friends might like your comments or postings? Its a sign that he doesnt trust you and its also a way for him to check up on you basically to make sure youre not doing anything he doesnt approve of. Your personal stuff is private and not for your husbands right to go through. Dont ever feel like you have to share every part of your life with him. That is control. It has nothing to do with trust, it has to do with his insecurities, and lack of trust in himself based on his past and actions that are questionable. 7. Does he seem to dislike all of your friends and the people they are in relationships with? A controlling guy will usually hate on everyone else in your life because he wants to be your number one, all the time. He will make comments about your girlfriends spouses looking at you the wrong way, or start accusing you of being with them, because of the way you look at one another. He will become Jealous of your friends and manipulate you to the point you either lose your friends or quit associating with them Just to keep the peace. They will get to the point they become so controlling and hate all of your friends so much that he slowly convinces you to stop talking to every single one of them. Thats not okay. In a relationship, you should both be able to have your own friends. Most likely he has no true friends himself, because he has no sense of handling anything he cannot be the controlling person in. 8. Do you often give into sex and your partners sexual demands Just to keep peace? even if you dont want to? Most women do. That is because it is easier to give in to the demand than deal later with the questions and accusations of seeing or being with someone else. It is a manipulative tool used by controlling and abusive spouses. Although sometimes you may want intimacy, but a controlling person can only be intimate enough and please you enough to meet their need. That is why you find yourself left behind in the enjoyment process of intimacy, because it is all about when they will get their Jollies, even when they make false attempts to please you on occasion. 9. Does he always want to be with your 2417? Away, isnt it so sweet when your husband wants to hang out every day and text every minute when youre not together? Jim, sort of, I guess? Theres a fine line between this being cute and this being controlling. In the beginning of the marriage, its cute. When things get more serious, its not always as cute. If a guy insists on being with you or talking to you 2417, being able to talk to you when apart and repeatedly calling until you answer, and stating it is because they were concerned for your well being, it is bullwhip. It means he wants to always know what youre doing, and in several states is considered stalking. At that point, you need to be like, chill or I am out of this marriage Everyone needs a little 10. Can your partner laugh at his own mistakes, or even admit his own weaknesses and shortcomings R is he too busy focused on why you make his life miserable? Most controlling and abusive husbands cannot acknowledge their weaknesses because that requires they recognize they are the root of the marital problem. 11. Does he make comments and basically tell you what you can wear or do? Your husband should never tell you what you can and cannot do. A marriage license is not a license of ownership. He shouldnt be saying, you cant wear that or you cant go there. You are an individual, you are not property to be owned or bossed around. If you can answer yes to at least four of the above, youre in a controlling, unhealthy abusive relationship. Sometimes it takes decades to comprehend, but you need to have them get help, or get out, before it destroys your identity and who you are. It will become like Stockholm syndrome, you will begin to think this is the norm, and lose any sense of individuality. Continually having someone pointing out your alts, the faults of your family members or others and accusing you of things that are false about you, and you are Jumping through hoop after hoop trying to fix yourself to accommodate the relationship is a futile and wasted effort. They are never going to change. You will never be what he wants you to be, even if you do manage to make things right?down the road there will be contradictions?and all the things youve made right will be wrong. There are serious emotional issues with your partner that stem so far back into his life, and the only way that he is able o validate his life is through the total control and belittling of you through emotional games. You ask yourself, Is this love? No. But it certainly presents itself as love initially Until the internal monster emerges. As tough as it may be, if you value you and your own sanity, stop. The only person you can fix in this relationship is you. Here are a few good resources in recognizing abusive relationships that explain abuse does not necessarily involve physical abuse, and how widespread this type of abuse is in America, and how rampant it is among spouses of military members as ell. Not all emotional abuse involves shouting or criticism. More common forms are disengaging the distracted or preoccupied spouse or stonewalling the spouse who refuses to accept anyone elses perspective.

Primary Standards in Chemistry
Primary Standards in Chemistry In chemistry, a primary standard is a reagent which is very pure, representative of the number of moles the substance contains and easily weighed. A reagent is a chemical that is used to cause a chemical reaction with another substance. Often, reagents are used to test for the presence or quantity of specific chemicals in a solution. Properties of Primary Standards Primary standards are typically used in titration to determine an unknown concentration and in other analytical chemistryà techniques. Titration is a process in which small amounts of a reagent are added to a solution until a chemical reaction occurs. The reaction provides confirmation that the solution is at a specific concentration. Primary standards are often used to make standard solutions (a solution with a precisely known concentration). A good primary standard meets the following criteria: high level of puritylow reactivity (high stability)high equivalent weight (to reduce error from mass measurements)not likely to absorb moisture from the air (hygroscopic) to reduce changes in mass in humid versus dry environmentsnon-toxicinexpensive and readily available In practice, few chemicals used as primary standards meet all of these criteria, although its critical thatà a standard is of high purity. Also, a compound which may be a good primary standard for one purpose may not be the best choice for another analysis. Examples of Primary Standards and Their Uses It may seem odd that a reagent is needed to establish the concentration of a chemical in solution. In theory, it should be possible to simply divide the mass of the chemical by the volume of the solution. But in practice, this isnt always possible. For example, sodium hydroxide (NaOH) tends to absorb moisture and carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, thus changing its concentration. A 1-gram sample of NaOH may not actually contain 1 gram of NaOH because additional water and carbon dioxide may have diluted the solution. To check the concentration of NaOH, a chemist must titrate a primary standard (in this case a solution of potassium hydrogen phthalate (KHP). KHP does not absorb water or carbon dioxide, and it can provide visual confirmation that a 1 gram solution of NaOH really contains 1 gram. There are many examples of primary standards; a few of the most common include: Sodium chloride (NaCl) is used as a primary standard for silver nitrate (AgNO3) reactions.Zinc powder may be used to standardize EDTA solutions after it has been dissolved in hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid.Potassium hydrogen phthalate or KHP may be used to standardize perchloric acid and an aqueous base in an acetic acid solution. Secondary Standard Definition A related term is secondary standard. A secondary standard is a chemical that has been standardized against a primary standard for use in a specific analysis. Secondary standards are commonly used to calibrate analytical methods. NaOH, once its concentration has been validated through the use of a primary standard, is often used as a secondary standard.

Answer the two questions....Strategic planning Essay
Answer the two questions....Strategic planning - Essay Example The decline in rates of repair can be demonstrated in the numbers and the industry is growing smaller and smaller rather than growing globally (Street, 2012). In the past decade, more than four thousand businesses that dealt specifically with repair have had to close their businesses in the US alone with the decline largely affecting service centers that dealt with consumer electronics as more than ten thousand shops have closed or have sought other businesses that are more profitable. The service technicians with an ability to deal with consumer electronics, small appliances and household electronics are becoming more difficult to find and this somewhat restricts the rate at which shops are able to service high-end appliances. If technicians with appropriate training are not available, then the owners of the service shops are not able to remain ahead of their competition or expand their operations globally through attracting the appropriate forms of repair jobs. Without a sufficient number of repair jobs on high-en appliances, the owners of shops cannot be able to afford employing the best and most skilled technicians. In the recent past, most consumers are keen on having their products, which are covered by warranties, repaired at authorized service shops (Bostick & Freese, 2012). Usually, there are businesses which are ran privately while having contracts with the manufacturers of specific products, with the service technicians being trained by the manufacturer s themselves. Every so often, industry associations provide sponsorships for trade shows that provide opportunities for manufacturers to offer seminars so that owners of repair shops and their technician can be certified and re-certified. *.. Analyze the impact of national context as it pertains to the appliance repair industry. Does national context help or hinder these companies in achieving a competitive advantage in the global marketplace? The American market for home appliance has gone through

Descartes Discourse Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words - 1
Descartes Discourse - Essay Example In the process, it appeared to me that the conclusion would be arrived at differently when Descartes confessed ââ¬Å"I observed that the proposition ââ¬ËI am thinking, therefore I existââ¬â¢ has nothing about it to assure me that I am speaking the truthâ⬠(Descartes, 2007). Apart from the projected certainty of the ââ¬Ëcogitoââ¬â¢ statement, he finds that he could only establish guarantee of truthfulness for matters that undergo an individualââ¬â¢s vivid conception. (2) Since you were expecting a different ending, evaluate how successful the author was in convincing you to accept the validity of the ââ¬Å"surprise endingâ⬠that was not clearly suggested at the beginning. Though the surprise ending is far from my basic assumption, Descartes managed to convince me through his admission of the perfection of God from whom the human capacity to think originated. It persuades me to agree with the power of reason as Descartes acknowledged that something or someone is greater than him and his potential to form thoughts or ability to doubt where he justifies the validity of reason over senses and cognition by reasoning itself. The philosopher at the time seems capable of being open to the light of all metaphysical and spiritual possibilities that need not be sustained by material or physical evidence in his quest for truth as long as his approach leads him to gradual and clear discernment of evidences when

Environment Management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 9500 words
Environment Management - Essay Example Now environment watch agencies call upon the companies to make an 'environment audit' along with their annual financial figures. In fact, a 'green business' is not only good for the environment and humanity but good for business's bottom line as well, because it gives an opportunity to the enterprise for managing the waste, cutting costs on wasteful expenditure, conserving energy and preserving the natural balance. This results in; Care of environment is not a 'project' in isolation, it has to be a mission and the zeal must be seen in all parts of business right from constructing the building to the final output packaging and transportation etc. Globalization has also necessitated the need for uniformity in dealing with regulations concerning environment. Now encouragement is given to industries, which favor gas over coal and oil, as it lessens the possibility of acid rain and ozone layer depletion. Environmental regulations are being accordingly changed with a futuristic view on sustainable development and safeguarding environment (Bishop et al, 1994) According to the Manual for Managing a Responsible Business Enterprise (RBE) in emerging market economies, prepared by the US Department of Commerce (2004), an RBE is characterized by responsible business conduct at four different levels of its identity as an enterprise. These four levels are: 1. Compliance with the law 2. Risk management 3. Reputation enhancement 4. Value added to the community This conduct is determined by the business conduct of its owners, managers, employees, agents and other stakeholders of the company. The businesses operate within a complex system of interests and influences. Stakeholders all have power, someone has a formal power invested in a position of authority or it could be the social power of being able to persuade others to support or oppose the policies of the company. Therefore, these stakeholders play a crucial role in devising ethical functioning for the company. At times, companies tend to pass on a product whose use might damage the environment, stating that they are resorting to such sales owing to market demands. But, the customer asks for the product only because s/he hasn't sent the alternative product yet. Since the tried and tested product has been offering value for money, fulfilling the needs, therefore there is a demand for it. But once the alternative is there and customer is allowed to compare the features and values, s/he m ight be willing to pay for it as well. Peter Drucker (1986) the management guru said, "It is the customer who determines what a business is. For, it is the customer and he alone through being willing to pay for a good or service, converts economic resources into wealth, things into goods." Corporate governance structures and styles vary in the environment they

After Wwi East Asia and North Merica Ap World History Essay Example for Free
After Wwi East Asia and North Merica Ap World History Essay After world war one East Asia and North America responded similarly to economic growth and social structure, while taking opposite decisions concerning politics and international relations. Both countries grew economically due to industrialism and their standard living improved by opting for western lifestyle. But japan was involved in war and with no thoughts of stopping while the United States was remaining out of it. To start with, United States and japan had similar ideas regarding their social structure. As the united stated was evolving in improving standard living, japan was moving towards western cultural values. In the United States womanââ¬â¢s rights and labor was beginning to be a normal idea and even birth control comes into the picture. While in japan gender equality, freedom of expression and dignity of the individual where being embraced. All of this because allot of men had to fight in war and people where needed to do work, women took a step and did it becoming not only efficient for working but also economically independent. In other words countries standard living was rising with more people being comfortable with their way of living and not rebelling because of having more rights. Moreover United States and japan had their difference regarding their international political position. While japan gets involved in war, the United States opts for isolationism. Although world war was over and japan had seen the deaths and devastation they decided to invade Manchuria a city in china and one year later invades Shanghai because of a minor conflict but also because Japanese where waiting for an excuse to conquer china for resources, after the battle of Shanghai 22 major battles followed. Meanwhile the United States stayed in their side provoking little problems. Not forgetting to mention that Japan and war one. Like that the United States and japan where in opposite sides of the war after The Great War, japan inside and the united states outside. In addition United States and japan both grew economically after world war one because their industrialism. Both of them got involved in the war very late that gave them more advantage because they had more weapons. Also their industry grew allot making more weapons to export and also they had more manufacturing. As well the United States was giving out loans to countries that where in a bad shape after war. These made both countries economically grow and become economically superior from other countries. In conclusion the United States and japan where similar regarding social structure and economics, they had their differences in their decisions to enter war again. Even more important is what would happened next and that despite their similarities they would end up as rivals and fighting against each other. Was that really the right choice?

Gas Gangrene :: essays research papers fc
à à à à à Gas gangrene is a severe form of gangrene which is also known as tissue death. It occurs as a result of infection by a bacterium that causes the tissue death. The symptoms of gas gangrene are numerous and severe. Gas gangrene is a disease that is very difficult to treat. All in all, gas gangrene is a very serious disease. à à à à à Gas gangrene is a form of gangrene (tissue death) usually caused by a bacterium known as clostridium porringers, but many other bacteria can cause the same effects. It is caused by an infection of clostridium bacteria that, under low oxygen conditions, produce toxins that cause the tissue death and associated symptoms. Gas gangrene is rare, with only 1,000 to 3,000 cases occurring in the United States annually. Gas gangrene usually occurs at the site of trauma or a recent surgical wound. About a third of cases occur spontaneously. Patients who develop this disease spontaneously often have underlying another disease such as diabetes or colon cancer. The onset of gas gangrene is sudden and dramatic. Inflammation begins at the site of infection and there is extremely painful tissue swelling. Gas may be felt in the tissue when the swollen area is pressed with the fingers. The areas infected expand so rapidly that changes are visible over a few minutes. The involved ti ssue is completely destroyed. Clostridium bacteria make many different toxins, some of which can cause potentially fatal syndromes. In addition, they cause tissue death, destruction of blood, and leaking of the blood vessels. à à à à à The symptoms of gas gangrene include moderate to severe pain around a skin injury, progressive swelling around a skin injury, and moderate to high fever. Also, when a person is infected, they form small, fluid filled blisters called vesicles. The blisters fill with a brown red fluid. Some symptoms are not so serious, such as sweating and an increased heart rate. Others are very serious like drainage from the tissues, foul-smelling brown-red or bloody fluid called serosanguineous discharge, and subcutaneous emphysema which is gas under the skin. The symptoms of gas gangrene occur suddenly and increase rapidly. à à à à à Treatment for gas gangrene can sometimes be drastic. Gas gangrene is a medical emergency because of the threat of the infection rapidly spreading via the bloodstream and infecting vital organs. It requires immediate surgery and administration of antibiotics. Prompt surgical removal of dead, damaged, and infected tissue is necessary.

Island of the Sequined Love Nun Chapter 27~28
27 Girl Talk Sepie washed the pilot's hair in a bowl with pounded coconut and brackish water. She had been taking care of the unconscious white man for two days and it was starting to get tedious. She was mispel of the bachelors' house, and washing and ministering to a sick and stinky white man was not in her job description. This was women's work. There are legends in the islands, and some of the old men swear they are true, that the women who service the bachelors' houses, the mispels, were taken to the secret island of Maluuk, known only to the high navigators, where they were trained in the art of pleasuring a man. After months of training, a mispel was required to pass a test before she was allowed to return to her home island to take over the duty of tending to the sexual needs of the men of the bachelors' house. The test? She was sent into the ocean with a ripe brown coconut clutched between her thighs, and there she floated, in heavy surf, for the entire circuit of the tides. Should the coconut pop loose or the mispel touch it with her hands, she failed the test (although there was some leeway in the event of shark attack). It is said that the inner thighs of the mispels of old were as strong as net cable. The second part of the test required the girl to find a delicate dragonfly orchid with a straight stem, and while her teachers looked on, she would lower herself over the flower until it disappeared inside of her, then rise again after a few minutes, leaving the stem unbent and the petals unbruised. The mispel held a position of honor, respected and revered among the is-landers. She was n ot required to do housekeeping, cooking, or weaving, and while the other women toiled in taro fields from the time they could walk, a mispel was allowed to nap in the shade, conserving her energy for her nocturnal duties. A mispel often ended her tour of duty by marrying a man of high status. No stigma followed her into married life, and she would be sought out to the end of her days by the other women for advice on handling men. Sepie, however, had not been chosen because of any special skill, nor had she passed through any vigorous concubinal boot camp. Sepie had been marked for mispel from the moment of her menses, when she emerged from the women's house with her lavalava tied a bit too high and showing a bit too much cappuccino thigh, her skin rubbed with copra until she glistened all over, and her breasts shining like polished wooden tea cups. She had painted her lips with the juice of crushed berries and peppered her long black hair with scores of sweet jasmine blossoms. She giggled coquettishly in the presence of all the men, danced dangerously close to the taboo of speaking to them in public, risked beatings by refusing to fall to her knees when her male cousins passed, and went about her chores with a wiggly energy that had caused more than one of the distracted village boys to fall out of a breadfruit tree during harvest. (She broke ankles as well as hearts.) Sepie was all titter and tease, a lazy g irl who excelled at leisure, a natural at invoking and denying desire, a wet dream deferred. At fifteen she took up residence in the bachelors' house and had lived there for four years. When Malink and the men brought the flyer and the man in the dress to her, she knew she was in for some trouble. ââ¬Å"Take care of them,â⬠Malink said. ââ¬Å"Feed them. Help to make them strong.â⬠Sepie kept her head bowed while Malink spoke, but when he finished she took his hand and led him into the bachelors' house, gesturing to the other men to lay the flyer and his friend on the ground outside. The men smiled among themselves, thinking that old Malink was going inside to receive a special favor from the mispel. What, in fact, he was receiving was an ass chewing. ââ¬Å"Why don't you take them to your house, Malink? I don't want them here.â⬠ââ¬Å"It's a secret. If my wife and daughters find out they are here, then everyone will know.â⬠ââ¬Å"I'm the only one who can keep a secret in the bachelors' house. Take them to old Sarapul's house. No one goes there.â⬠ââ¬Å"He wants to eat them.â⬠Malink couldn't remember ever having to argue with a woman and he wasn't at all prepared for it. ââ¬Å"You're chief. Tell him not to. I will not cook for them. If I feed them, they will shit. I'm not going to clean it up.â⬠ââ¬Å"Sepie, what will you do when you marry and have children? You will have to do these things then. I am asking you as your chief to do these things.â⬠ââ¬Å"No,â⬠Sepie said. Malink sighed. ââ¬Å"I am asking you to do these things because these men have been sent to us by Vincent.â⬠Sepie didn't know what to say. She had heard the Sky Priestess chastise Malink in front of the people, but she had been more concerned with losing coffee and sugar for a month than with the actual offense. ââ¬Å"You will tell the men to cook for them?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes.â⬠ââ¬Å"And they will carry them to the beach and wash them if they shit?â⬠ââ¬Å"I will tell them. Please, Sepie.â⬠No man had ever said ââ¬Å"pleaseâ⬠to her before, let alone the chief. It was not a courtesy that women deserved. For the first time she realized how desperate Malink really was. ââ¬Å"And you will tell Abo to wash his dick when it is his turn.â⬠ââ¬Å"What does that have to do with this?â⬠ââ¬Å"He is stinky.â⬠ââ¬Å"I will tell him.â⬠ââ¬Å"And you will tell Favo to quit making me put beads in his ass.â⬠ââ¬Å"Favo does that?â⬠ââ¬Å"He said he learned it from the Japanese.â⬠ââ¬Å"Really? Favo?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes.â⬠ââ¬Å"But he's old, and he has a wife and many grandchildren.â⬠ââ¬Å"He says it makes his spear stronger.â⬠ââ¬Å"He does? I mean, does it work?â⬠Malink had momentarily forgotten why he was here. ââ¬Å"I don't like it. It is evil and unclean.â⬠ââ¬Å"You're talking about my old friend Favo, right? He's the one you're talking about?â⬠ââ¬Å"I told him only bachelors were suppose to stay here, but he says his wife doesn't understand him. His hands are like the skin of a shark.â⬠ââ¬Å"What kind of beads?â⬠ââ¬Å"Tell him,â⬠Sepie said. ââ¬Å"Okay,â⬠Malink said in English. Then to himself he said: ââ¬Å"Old Favo.â⬠He shook his head as he walked out of the bachelors' house. ââ¬Å"Beads.â⬠Sepie watched him go, wishing that she had asked for more favors. Outside the men were grinning when Malink stepped into the moonlight. He hitched up his loincloth and averted his eyes from theirs. ââ¬Å"Take them inside. You must cook and clean for them. Don't let the woman do it. It is too important for her.â⬠As the men carried Tuck and Kimi into the bachelors' house, Favo ambled up to Malink. ââ¬Å"How was it?â⬠Malink looked at his old friend and noticed for the first time that Favo wore a long string of ivory beads around his neck. ââ¬Å"I have to go home now,â⬠Malink said. Sepie was, once again, swabbing up the wooden floor where the pilot had urinated on himself, when she heard the other one speak for the first time. The men had propped the Filipino up in the corner, where he had sat drinking the coconut milk and fish broth that she had been pouring into the pilot, but except for a few grunts when he made his way outside to urinate, the man in the dress had been quiet for two days. Sepie had learned to ignore him. He didn't smell as bad as the pilot, and she sort of liked his flowered dress. She'd said a prayer to Vincent for a dress just like it. ââ¬Å"Where is Roberto?â⬠the Filipino said. Sepie jumped. It didn't surprise her so much that he had spoken, but that he had spoken in her language. Although the words were clipped, the way someone from Iffallik or Satawan might speak. ââ¬Å"He's right here,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"Your friend stinks. You should take him outside and wash him in the sea.â⬠ââ¬Å"That's not Roberto. That's Tucker. Roberto is shorter.â⬠Kimi crawled over to Tuck and laid his hand on the flyer's forehead. ââ¬Å"He has bad fever. You have medicine?â⬠ââ¬Å"Aspirin,â⬠Sepie said. Malink had given her a bottle of the tablets to crush into the flyer's broth, but after he gagged on the first dose she had stopped giving it to him. ââ¬Å"He is more sick than aspirin. He needs a doctor. You have a doctor?â⬠ââ¬Å"We have the Sorcerer. He does our medicine. He was a doctor before the Sky Priestess came.â⬠Kimi looked at her. ââ¬Å"What island is this?â⬠ââ¬Å"Alualu.â⬠ââ¬Å"Ha! We have to get doctor for Tucker. He owes me five hundred dollars.â⬠Sepie's eyes went wide. No wonder he wears such a fine dress. Five hundred dollars! She said, ââ¬Å"The chief says I have to be secret about this man. Everyone knows he is here. The boys get drunk and talk. But I can't get the doctor.â⬠ââ¬Å"Why are you taking care of him? You are just a girl.â⬠ââ¬Å"I am not just a girl. I am mispel.â⬠Kimi scoffed. ââ¬Å"There are no mispels anymore.â⬠Sepie threw down the rag she was using to wipe the floor. ââ¬Å"What do you know? You are a man in a dress, and I don't believe you have five hundred dollars.â⬠ââ¬Å"It was a nice dress before the typhoon,â⬠Kimi said. ââ¬Å"Wash-and-wear. No dry cleaning.â⬠Sepie nodded as if she knew what he was talking about. ââ¬Å"It is a very pretty dress. I like it.â⬠ââ¬Å"You do?â⬠Kimi picked at the crushed pleats around his legs. ââ¬Å"It's just an old thing I picked up in Manila. It was on sale. You really like it?â⬠Sepie didn't understand. Among her people, if you admired someone's else possession, manners bound them to give it to you. How could this silly man speak her language and still not know her customs. And he wasn't even looking at her that way all men looked at her. ââ¬Å"What island do you come from?â⬠ââ¬Å"Satawan,â⬠Kimi said. ââ¬Å"I am a navigator.â⬠Sepie scoffed. ââ¬Å"There are no more navigators.â⬠Just then the doorway darkened and they looked up to see Abo, the fierce one, entering the bachelors' house. He was lean and heavily muscled and he wore a permanent scowl on his face. The sides of his head were shaved and tattooed with images of hammerhead sharks. He wore his hair tied into a warrior's topknot that had gone out of fashion a hundred years ago. ââ¬Å"Has the pilot awakened?â⬠he growled. Sepie looked down and smiled coyly. Abo was the one boy in the bachelors' house who didn't seem to accept the communal nature of her position. He was always jealous, enraged, or brooding, but he brought her many presents, sometimes even copies of People that he stole from the men's drinking circle. Sepie thought she might marry him someday. ââ¬Å"He is too sick for this,â⬠Kimi said. ââ¬Å"We need to take him to the doctor.â⬠ââ¬Å"Malink says he must stay here until he is well.â⬠ââ¬Å"He is dying.â⬠Kimi said. Abo looked at Sepie for confirmation. ââ¬Å"Well, he smells dead,â⬠she said. The sooner they sent the pilot to the Sorcerer, the sooner she could get back to spending her days swimming and preening. ââ¬Å"Malink will be angry if he dies,â⬠she added for good measure. Abo nodded. ââ¬Å"I will tell him.â⬠He pointed to Kimi. ââ¬Å"You come with me.â⬠Kimi got up to leave, then turned back to Sepie when he reached the doorway. ââ¬Å"If Roberto comes, tell him I'll be right back.â⬠Sepie shrugged. ââ¬Å"Who is Roberto?â⬠ââ¬Å"He's a fruit bat. From Guam. You can tell by his accent.â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh, him. I think Sarapul ate him,â⬠Sepie said casually.â⬠Kimi turned and ran screaming into the village. Malink looked up from his breakfast, a banana leaf full of fish and rice, to see Abo coming down the coral path toward his house. Malink's wife and daughters shuffled to the cookhouse at the sight of the fierce one. ââ¬Å"Good morning, Chief,â⬠Abo said. ââ¬Å"Food?â⬠Malink answered, gesturing with his breakfast. Abo had already eaten, but it would have been rude not to accept. ââ¬Å"Yes.â⬠Malink's wife poked her head out of the cookhouse and saw the chief nod. In a second she was giving her own breakfast to Abo, who neither thanked her or acknowledged her presence. ââ¬Å"The pilot is sick,â⬠Abo said. ââ¬Å"Very bad fever. Sepie and the girl-man say that he will die soon without the Sorcerer's help.â⬠Malink suddenly lost his appetite. He set his breakfast on the ground and one of his daughters appeared out of nowhere to take it to the cookhouse, where the women shared what was left. ââ¬Å"And what do you think?â⬠Malink asked. ââ¬Å"I think he is dying. He smells of sickness. Like when Tamu was bitten by the shark and his leg turned black.â⬠Malink rubbed his temples. How to handle this? The Sky Priestess was angry with him for even dreaming of the pilot. What would happen if he suddenly showed up with him? ââ¬Å"What about the girl-man?â⬠ââ¬Å"He is not sick, but he has gone crazy. He runs around the village looking for Sarapul.â⬠Malink nodded. ââ¬Å"Catch him and tie him up. Make a litter and take the pilot to the betel nut trees by the runway. Leave him there.â⬠ââ¬Å"Leave him there?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes, quickly. And bring the litter back with you. Make it look as if he walked to the runway. Send a boy to me when it is done. Go now.â⬠Abo put down his food and ran off down the path. Malink went into his house and pulled the ammo box out of the rafters. Inside, next to the portable phone, he found the Zippo that Vincent had given him. He clicked it open, lit it, and sat it on the floor while it burned. ââ¬Å"Vincent,â⬠he said, ââ¬Å"It's your friend Malink here. Please tell the Sky Priestess that this is not my fault. Tell her that you have sent the pilot. Please tell her for your friend Malink so she will not be angry. Amen.â⬠His prayer finished, Malink snapped the lighter shut, put it away, then took the portable phone and went outside to wait for the boy to tell him everything was in place. 28 Choose Your Own Nightmare Tucker Case rolled through a fever dream where he was tossed in great elastic waves of bat-winged demons ââ¬â crushed, smothered, bitten, and scratched ââ¬â and there, amid the chaos, a pink fabric softener sheet passed by the corner of his eye, confirming that he had been stuffed into a dryer in the laundromat of Hell. He tumbled toward the pink, ascended out of the clawing mass, and awoke gasping, with no idea where he was. The pink was a dress on a heart-faced woman who said, ââ¬Å"Good morning, Mr. Case. Welcome back to the world.â⬠A man's voice: ââ¬Å"After your message and the typhoon, we thought for sure you'd been lost at sea.â⬠He was a white blur with a head, then a lab coat wrapped around a tall, smiling middle-aged man, gray and balding, a stethoscope around his neck. The doctor had his arm around the heart-faced woman. She too was smiling, with the aspect of an angel, the vessel of human kindness. Together they looked as if they had walked off of fifties television. The man said, ââ¬Å"I'm Dr. Sebastian Curtis, Mr. Case. This is my wife, Beth.â⬠Tuck tried to speak, but emitted only a rasping squeak. The woman lifted a plastic cup of water to his lips and he drank. He eyed the IV bag running into his arm. ââ¬Å"Glucose and antibiotics,â⬠the doctor said. ââ¬Å"You've got some badly infected wounds. The islanders found you washed up on the reef.â⬠Tucker did a quick inventory of his limbs by feel, then looked at them lest he had lost a leg that was still giving off phantom feel ing. He raised his head to look at his crotch, which was sending pulses of pain up through his abdomen. The woman gently pushed him down. ââ¬Å"You're going to be fine. They found you in time, but you're going to need more rest. ââ¬ËBastian can give you something for the pain if you need it.â⬠She smiled beatifically at her husband, who patted Tuck's arm. ââ¬Å"Don't be embarrassed, Mr. Case. Beth is a surgical nurse. I'm afraid the catheter will have to stay in for a few days.â⬠ââ¬Å"There was another guy with me,â⬠Tuck said. ââ¬Å"A Filipino. He was piloting the boat.â⬠The doctor and his wife shot each other a glance and the ââ¬Å"Ozzie and Harrietâ⬠calm shattered into panic, but only for a second, then they were back to their reassuring cooing. Tuck wasn't even sure he had seen the break. ââ¬Å"I'm sorry, but the islanders didn't find anyone else. He must have been lost in the storm.â⬠ââ¬Å"But the tree. He was hung in the treeâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Beth Curtis put her finger gently on his lips. ââ¬Å"I'm sorry you lost your friend, Mr. Case, but you need to get some rest. I'll bring you something to eat in a little while and we'll see if you can hold down some solid food.â⬠She pulled her hand away and put her arm around her husband's waist as he pushed a syringe of fluid into Tuck's IV tube. ââ¬Å"We'll check on you shortly,â⬠the doctor said. Tucker watched them walk away and noticed that for all her ââ¬Å"Little House on the Prairieâ⬠purity, Beth Curtis had a nice shape under that calico. Then he felt a little sleazy, as if he'd been caught horning on a friend's mom. Like the time, drunk and full of himself, he'd hit on Mary Jean Dobbins. To hell with solid food. Gin ââ¬â in large quantities over a tall column of ice ââ¬â that's the rub. Tonic to chase away the blues of bad dreams and men lost at sea. Tuck looked around the room. It was a small hospital ward. Only four beds, but amazingly clean considering where it was. And there was some pretty serious-looking equipment against the walls: technical stuff on casters, stuff you might use in complicated surgery or to set the timing on a Toyota. He was sure Jake Skye would know what it was. He thought about the Learjet, then felt himself starting to doze. Sleep came with the face of a cannibal, leg-jerk dreams, and finally settled in on the oiled breasts of a brown girl brushing against his face and smelling of coconut and flowers. There was a scratch and scuttle on the tin roof, followed by the bark of a fruit bat. Tuck didn't hear it. The pig thief had been caught and Jefferson Pardee had to find a new lead story. He sat at his desk pouring over the notes he'd written on a yellow legal pad, hoping that something would jump out at him. In fact, there wasn't a lot of jumping material there. The notes read: ââ¬Å"They caught the pig thief. Now what?â⬠You could run down the leads, pound the pavement, check all your facts with two sources, then structure your meticulously gathered information into the inverted pyramid form and what you got was: The pig's owner had gotten drunk and beat up his wife, so she sold his pig to someone on the outer islands and bought a used stun gun from an ensign with the Navy Cat team. The next time her husband got rough, a group of Japanese tourists found him by the side of the road, sizzling in the dirt like a strip of frying bacon. Mistaking him for a street performer, the tourists clapped joyously, took pictures of each other standing beside the electrocuted man, and gave his wife five dollars. The whole intrigue had been exposed when police found the pig-stealing wife in front of the Continental Hotel charging tourists a dollar apiece to watch her zap her husband's twitching supine body. The stun gun was confiscated, no charges were pressed, and the wife beater was pronounced unharmed by a Peace Co rps volunteer, although he did need to be reminded several times of his name, where he lived, and how many children he had. The mystery was solved and the Truk Star had no lead story. Jefferson Pardee was miserable. He was actually going to have to go out and find a story or, as he had done so many time before, make one up. The Micro Spirit was in port. Maybe he'd go down to the dock and see if he could stir up some news out of the crew. He slid his press card into the band of his Australian bush hat and waddled out the door and down the dusty street to the pier where rock-hard, rope-muscled islanders were loading fifty-five-gallon drums into cargo nets and hoisting them into the holds of the Micro Spirit. The Micro Spirit and the Micro Trader were sister ships: small freighters that cruised the Micronesian crescent carrying cargo and passengers to the outer islands. There were no cabins other than those of the captain and crew. Passengers traveled and slept on the deck. Pardee waved to the first mate, a heavily tattooed Tongan who stood at the rail chewing betel nut and spitting gooey red comets over the side. ââ¬Å"Ahoy!â⬠Pardee called. ââ¬Å"Permission to come aboard.â⬠The mate shook his head. ââ¬Å"Not until we finish loading this jet fuel. I'll come down. How you doing, Scoop?â⬠Pardee had convinced the crew of the Micro Spirit to call him ââ¬Å"Scoopâ⬠one drunken night in the Yumi Bar. He watched the mate vault over the railing at the bow and monkey down a mooring line to the dock with no more effort than if he was walking down stairs. Watching him made Pardee sad that he was a fat man. The mate strolled up to Pardee and pumped his hand. ââ¬Å"Good to see you.â⬠ââ¬Å"Likewise,â⬠Pardee said. ââ¬Å"Where you guys in from?â⬠ââ¬Å"We bring chiefs in from Wolei for a conference. Pick up some tuna and copra. Same, same.â⬠Pardee looked back at the sailors loading the barrels. ââ¬Å"Did you say jet fuel? I thought the Mobil tankers handled all the fuel for Continental.â⬠Continental was the only major airline that flew Micronesia. ââ¬Å"Mobil tankers won't go to Alualu. No lagoon, no harbor. We going to Ulithi, then take this fuel special order to the doctor on Alualu.â⬠Pardee took a moment to digest the information. ââ¬Å"I thought the Micro Trader did Yap and Palau States. What are you going all the way over there for?â⬠ââ¬Å"Like I say, special order. Moen has jet fuel, we here in Moen, doctor wants jet fuel soon, so we go. I like it. I never been Alualu and I know a girl on Ulithi.â⬠Pardee couldn't help but smile. This was a story in itself. Not a big one, but when the Trader or the Spirit changed schedules it made the paper. But there was more of a story somewhere in those barrels of jet fuel, in the ru-mor of armed guards, and in the two pilots that had passed through Truk on the way to No One's Island. The question for Pardee was: Did he want to track it down? Could he track it down? ââ¬Å"When do you sail?â⬠he asked the mate. ââ¬Å"Tomorrow morning. We get drunk together tonight Yumi Bar. My boys carry you home if you want. Hey?â⬠The mate laughed. Pardee felt sick. That was what they knew him for, a fat, drunken white man who they could carry home and then tell stories about. ââ¬Å"I can't drink tonight. I'm sailing with you in the morning. I've got to get ready.â⬠The mate removed the betel nut cud from his cheek and tossed it into the sea, where tiny yellow fish rose to nip at it. He eyed Pardee suspiciously. ââ¬Å"You going to leave Truk?â⬠ââ¬Å"It's not that big a deal. I've gone off-island before for a story.â⬠ââ¬Å"Not in ten years I sail the Spirit.â⬠ââ¬Å"Do you have room for another passenger or not?â⬠ââ¬Å"We always have room. You know you have to sleep on deck?â⬠Pardee was beginning to get irritated. He needed a beer. ââ¬Å"I've done this before.â⬠The mate shook his head as if clearing his ears of water and laughed. ââ¬Å"Okay, we sail six in morning. Be on dock at five.â⬠ââ¬Å"When do you come back this way?â⬠ââ¬Å"A month. You can fly from Yap if you don't want to come back with us.â⬠ââ¬Å"A month?â⬠He'd have to get someone to run the paper while he was gone. Or maybe not. Would anyone even notice he was gone? Pardee said, ââ¬Å"I'll see you in the morning. Don't get too drunk.â⬠ââ¬Å"You too,â⬠the mate said. Pardee made his way down the dock, feeling every bit of his two hundred and sixty pounds. By the time he made it back to the street, he was soaked with sweat and yearning for a dark air-conditioned bar. He shook off the craving and headed for the Catholic high school to ask the nuns if they had any bright students who might keep the paper running in his absence. He was going to do it, dammit. He'd be on the dock at five if he had to stay up all night drinking to do it.
