Is it the fact that there are heterosexual couples that have rights and benefits available to them unlike the homosexual couples? Or is it based on whether or not people, no matter their sexual preference, are in a marital relationship with another being. This article tries to persuade citizens, especially singles, that giving benefits and rights to married couples, gay or straight, is unreasonable. The author comes from a singles person’s perspective, which â€Å"don’t share in he deal given to married couples† and bears a different viewpoint dealing with the gay marriage issue (Harrop 675). In Froma Harrop’s â€Å"Gay, Straight: What’s The Deal†, she explains â€Å"the deal† through his use of the appeals to Logos, Pathos, and Ethos. In this article Harrop uses facts as examples to show that it’s neither fair nor right that married couples are allotted privileges that single Americans do not. Take the lesbian couple for example, â€Å"†¦the women filed a medical-malpractice lawsuit. One of them suffered from advanced breast cancer, which the suit claimed, a doctor had failed to detect. The other wanted to collect for â€Å"loss of consortium.†(Harrop 675). The author belittles the couple for the â€Å"collection of monetary† which makes it seem as if she is blaming the use of the benefits that are given to married couples. The author uses this fact and compares it to those people who are close but are in a non-marital relationship. â€Å"You can’t read this without thinking about similar hurts being felt all the time in non-marital relationships†¦ Why can’t they sue for loss of companionship, also?† (Harrop 675). On the pathos she uses emotion and an angry tone that makes her irritation over gay marriage clear as well as use the word â€Å"you† and â€Å"us† to make the examples seem more real and personable. â€Å"In doing this, the senators have earned my gratitude- though for reasons not directly related to gay rights. Rather the move will spare us all some of the repetitive back-and-forth that has characterized this debate.† (Harrop 675). This technique Harrop uses allows for the author and the single American audience to meet in the middle and find some common ground on this issue. â€Å"What really rankles me...† and â€Å"So much attention is paid to married couples that most of the public- including single people themselves- think of unmarried adults as a marginal minority.† Further show her anger of the treatment towards the single Americans (Harrop 675). Another use of pathos is show in the example about the sisters. â€Å"Government should have no interest in a citizen’s marital status. It certainly has no business sending a bigger tax bill to cohabiting sisters that to a man-and-wife team reporting the same income and deductions as the sisters.† with this the author implies that the status of the relationship does not set the morality of the government and their beliefs (Harrop 676). By using the choices of words she does, its allows for the audience to see how compassionate she is about this issue and that it is r eally important to her that she portrays that to her readers. What helps make this article a persuasive article is the ethos appeal. â€Å"Quickie marriages get more legal respect that friendships lasting decades.†(Harrop 675). This helps her portray that society does not approve of this certain action just to receive the benefits. Harrop gains the credibility and the sense of confidence by using examples that everyday people in society can relate to. A History Of The British Labour Party Politics Essay The Labour Party is a political party in Great Britain that is just about 110 years old. The party was formed in 1900 as an outgrowth of the trade union movement and to change Parliaments interests. The reason the Labour Party wanted Parliament changed was because the people who formed the party felt that Parliament was not representing the interests of everybody in Britain. The people who felt neglected by Parliament were hard working people, socialists, and unionists. During the early stages, the Labour party struggled to make an immediate impact in Britains political system and the partys leaders had to do something about their struggle. The Labours leaders worked with Liberal Governments during 1906-1914 to help themselves gain some form of political ground. The Liberal parties eventually split in 1916 and the Labour Party saw this as a perfect opportunity to obtain power. The 1918 election proved a pivotal point for the Labour Party and even though they did not win the general e lection, they came away with one-quarter of the vote. The reason the 1918 election was so successful for the Labours was because of World War I coming to an end and the growth of womens suffrage. On December 6, 1923, the Labour Party won the general election and finally reached the major political office for the first time in its partys history. The party only held office for a few months under Ramsay MacDonald, and failed to get reelected for a second term. A main reason for the party not getting reelected was because of the Zinoviev letter. The letter was published in British press stating that there were connections between Russian Communists and the Labour Party. Due to anti-communism in Great Britain, the Labours lost the 1924 election as well as 40 seats in the House of Commons. The Zinoviev letter later turned out to be forgery, but the damage was already done to the Labour Party. The Labour Party would rebound later in 1929, but the major election they won came in 1945. The crucial election followed after the Second World War. When the war ended in May 1945, Winston Churchill called for a general election a few months later in July. The Labour Party was running under the slogan of Let Us Face the Future, and its message was that Britain cannot return to poverty and unemployment like the 1930s. The Labour Party also promised to remove disease, want, squalor, ignorance, and unemployment. The Labours ended up winning in a landslide and this presented the party with the opportunity of making significant changes for Great Britain. After the crucial election in 1945, the Labour Party once again was elected in 1950 and this marked the first time in the Partys history where they won consecutive elections. Following the 1950 election, the Labour Party would only be in office for around 14 years till 1997. The Conservative Party dominated the general elections, winning three consecutive terms in 1951-1959 and four consecutive terms in 1979-1992. This was a result of internal fighting of the Labour Party and as a consequence, people detached from the party to form the Social Democratic Party in 1981. All of these effects left the Labour Party out of dominance for nearly three decades and would not come back to power until Labour Party candidate Tony Blair was up for election. Blair had become the party leader in 1994 and won the 1997 general election in a landslide. Blairs term was also called the New Labour because it was seen as a separation from the old Labour for having different policies such as one known as the Third Way. The New Labour term was proven to be the right fit for Blair because he won the next two elections and this became the Labour Partys first time winning three cons ecutive elections. Blair did not become very popular with Great Britain and its citizens because of his stance on the Iraq War. Blair ended up resigning on June 27, 2007 and Gordon Brown was handed the Prime Minister position after Blairs resignation. Gordon Brow was the Chancellor of the Exchequer during Blairs term as Prime Minister of Great Britain. The Chancellor of the Exchequer is a Cabinet position responsible for all economic and financial matters. After the earthquake, at least 80 were killed and 700 were injured. This earthquake was the heaviest in the rural area in Yiliang country. One of the elementary school collapsed in the earthquake. Authorities are not sure if the children are killed. In 2008, there was an earthquake in Yunnan’s neighbouring Sichuan province, which killed 80 000 people. Thousands of children were killed after shoddily built schools collapsed. In Luozehe, rescue workers strained to move rocks out of the road. They had to clear the road to avoid chaos in traffic. Civil affair departments said that the earthquakes destroyed 6650 houses and damaged 430 000. More than 100 000residents evacuated and 100 000 others are in need of relocation. Officials in Guizhou province said nearly 28,000 people were affected by the quakes, with 18 houses toppled and more than 10,000 houses damaged. The first earthquake which reached a magnitude of 5. 7 struck at 11. 19am on Friday. There were 16 aftershocks, the strongest of which reached measured a magnitude of 5. 6. They will get to the point they become so controlling and hate all of your friends so much that he slowly convinces you to stop talking to every single one of them. Thats not okay. In a relationship, you should both be able to have your own friends. They are never going to change. You will never be what he wants you to be, even if you do manage to make things right?down the road there will be contradictions?and all the things youve made right will be wrong. There are serious emotional issues with your partner that stem so far back into his life, and the only way that he is able o validate his life is through the total control and belittling of you through emotional games. The reaction provides confirmation that the solution is at a specific concentration. Primary standards are often used to make standard solutions (a solution with a precisely known concentration). For example, sodium hydroxide (NaOH) tends to absorb moisture and carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, thus changing its concentration. A 1-gram sample of NaOH may not actually contain 1 gram of NaOH because additional water and carbon dioxide may have diluted the solution. To check the concentration of NaOH, a chemist must titrate a primary standard (in this case a solution of potassium hydrogen phthalate (KHP). KHP does not absorb water or carbon dioxide, and it can provide visual confirmation that a 1 gram solution of NaOH really contains 1 gram.
